A Christmas day in Edinburgh/ Un dia de Navidad en Edimburgo

Hace unas semanas nos acercamos a pasar el día a Edimburgo ya que está muy cerca de Glasgow y es una ciudad preciosa y que es sin duda parada obligatoria cuando se viene a Escocia.
Nos hizo un día estupendo, frio pero muy soleado así que aprovechamos para visitar pero todo exterior, ya que lo normal son días lluviosos y ahí es cuando merece la pena ver museos etc.

Cómo llegar: En nuestro caso como vivimos en Glasgow, fuimos en tren directos desde la estación de Partick (es la más cercana para nosotros), pero también se puede coger en Glasgow Queen Street y te lleva a Edimburgo Waverley que es la estación central de Edimburgo y está en el centro de la ciudad entre la Royal Mile y Princess St. Con descuento aplicado nos costó 19£/los dos ida y vuelta y tarda 1:15h.

Few weeks ago, we went to visit Edinburgh, which is quite close to Glasgow, and it’s a beautiful city that requires a must visit when someone come to Scotland.

The weather was really good, cold but sunny, so we visited all we can but only outside places, because when it’s rains is better to visit museums etc.

How to get there: by train from Glasgow, in our case direct from Partick Station, but you can go also from Glasgow Queen Street. The train arrives at Edinburgh Waverley, the main train station, which is also in the city center (between the Royal Mile and Princes St). Price with discount was 19£/two of us with return included at it takes 1:15h.

Lo primero que recorrimos fue la Royal Mile bajando al Palacio de Holyroodhouse desde South Bridge y recorriendo también algunos de los closes (que son los callejones que hay a lo largo de toda la Royal Mile).

The first place we visited was the Royal Mile, we walked down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse from the South Brigde and we entered also in some of the closes (the narrow small streets, which there are along the Royal Mile in both sides).

Después volvimos a subir por la Royal Mile y nos acercamos a Canongate Kirk, desde donde se puede observar Calton Hill (el próximo día que vayamos subiremos a Calton Hill).

After that, we went up along the Royal Mile, and we went to Canongate Kirk, where you can see one of the best views of Calton Hill (we will go to Calton Hill on our next visit to this city).

Luego estuvimos en Cockburn Street, subimos por Anchor Close para volver a la Royal Mile, donde vimos las City Chambers y la Catedral de St. Giles.

Then we walked at Cockburn Street, went up through Anchor Close, to arrive again to the Royal Mile, where we saw the City Chambers and St. Giles Cathedral.

Y luego hicimos un pequeño circuito a pie por el Old Town bajando por Oldfishermarket Close, llegando a Cowgate y desde ahí una de las plazas más bonitas de Edimburgo, Grassmarket, que además está llena de pequeños restaurantes y cafeterías ideales para tomar algo a media mañana.

Then we walk on a short foot circuit through Old Town, walking down by Oldfishermarket Close, getting to Cowgate, and there to one of the most beautiful squares in Edinburgh, Grassmarket, it’s full of small restaurants and cafeterias, ideal for a stop on a tourism journey.

Subimos por la colorida calle Victoria St. La cual tiene una balconada con unas vistas preciosas y desde ahi fuimos a Johnson Terrace para ver el castillo desde abajo.

We walked up into the colourful Victoria St., it has a huge balcony with really nice viewings, and from there we went to Jonhson Terrace, to see the castle from.

Y desde ahí ya pusimos rumbo al Castillo (solo lo vimos por fuera pero no lo visitamos). From there we headed to the Castle (we only visited it, from the outside).

Desde ahí nos acercamos a New College, y estuvimos callejando, hasta llegar por casualidad al Writer’s Museum, terminando de nuevo en la Royal Mile a la altura de la Catedral de St. Giles.

After that we went to the New College, and walked to discover new places, and by chance we arrived to Writer’s Museum, ended up into the Royal Mile, at St. Giles Cathedral.

Después de comer y antes de que anocheciera fuimos a Princes St. Y aprovechando que era navidad estuvimos visitando el mercadillo navideño en Princes Gardens, estaba precioso! Desde donde pudimos ver todo iluminado y vimos atardecer.

After out meal and before the nightfall another must visit is Princes St. And due to the fact that it was Christmas time, we visited the Christmas Market at Princes Gardens, it was so beautiful! From there we were able to see the Christmas lights and the sunset.

Comer o tomar algo / Food or Drink: Castle Arms

Es un restaurante con platos típicos escoceses, precios muy buenos y con unos empleados muy amables para recomendarte que pedir etc. Además la decoración del local es genial con diferentes estancias, y muy acogedora. Y lo mejor de todo son las vistas que tiene de Victoria St. Nosotros pedimos los tradicionales Haggis, Fish & Chips y cordero en salsa.

It’s a delicious traditional Scottish food in a cosy warm atmosphere, really good prices and helpful staff that recommend you the best dishes. One of the best things for this restaurant are also the nice views of Victoria St. We ordered traditional Haggis, Fish & chips and lamb shank.
